Urgent Ophthalmology Referrals
Leeds Teaching Hospitals have issued guidance to Optometrists who require to refer a patient urgently.
Primary Care Access Line (PCAL) – (0113) 2065996 can be called by any Optometrist to refer a patient urgently.
PCAL lines are open from 7am til 12 midnight Monday to Friday, then at the weekend 8am-7pm. These lines are staffed by nurses who are experienced in general Accident & Emergency nursing so will not have specialist ophthalmic knowledge but may have some decision making protocols.
Eye Casualty Ophthalmologists – To discuss a patient with an Ophthalmologist to guide the decision about treatment or referral then call (0113) 2065335 or (0113) 2064796 between normal clinic hours of Monday to Friday 9am-5pm.
An alternative to this would be to phone the eye clinic nursing staff on (0113) 2064737. Please note that it is not always possible for the nurses to answer this phone during busy periods.
Binocular double vision of recent onset (<2 weeks) should be seen urgently; a faxed referral to the Orthoptic Department at St James’s can be made (Fax 0113 2066055). This same fax can be used for semi-urgent cases of binocular diplopia where onset is > 2 weeks ago; please include patient phone number.
Please click on the link on the right to read the full guidance from Mr John Buchan, Consultant in Emergency Eye Care, SJUH.
Children – for guidance on urgent referrals for children (updated 2018) see the Children’s vision pathway.
AMD Fast-Track Pathway
Practitioners are reminded to use the Leeds wet AMD rapid access referral pathway for urgent cases, who may benefit from prompt diagnosis and treatment. This can speed up the process and avoid unnecessary delays for the patient, who should be seen within 2 weeks.
Please email any referrals using the email listed on the form to your chosen provider via your NHS.net account.
Please note faxing is no longer available.
