Enhanced Optical services in Birmingham

Services for patients  of GPs affiliated to Sandwell and West Birmingham CCG  living in West Birmingham are commissioned by SWB CCG

The current services are Cataract IOP repeat measures and CUES commissioned from Primary Eyecare Services Ltd which has the support of Birmingham LOC

Services for patients of GPs affiliated to Birmingham and Solihull GPs are commissioned by BSol CCG

The current services are cataract IOP repeat measures and CUES commissioned from Primary Eyecare Services Ltd which has the support of Birmingham LOC

Additionally post-op cataract services are commissioned from PES by Optegra and others

and directly with affiliated practices by SPA Medica

If you are interested in providing EOS for SWB CCG and BSol CCG GP patients via PES then please express your interest via <insert link>

Practices will need to hold a GOS contract and to be compliant with GOS contract requirements

You will need to complete the Quality in Optometry checklist for NHS Standard Contract as a subcontractor of Primary Eyecare Services Ltd please see the question list  <insert link to BLOC document>

Your LOC continues to work with commissioners and PES to implement further enhanced services look for updates here

Cataract enhanced service

Once cataract identified

  1. Discuss findings with patients
  2. Exclude any comorbidities
  3. Check eligibility for this service
  4. Discuss procedure and risks
  5. Discuss options available
  6. Patient completes pre-op questionnaire
  7. Complete referral including pre cataract refraction info

IOP repeat measures service

  1. Patient identified as IOP above 24 in one eye and no other signs of glaucoma
  2. Repeat IOPs with slit lamp mounted Goldmann or Perkins
  3. Further repeat where indicated on second occasion
  4. Referral where indicated

CUES

  1. Identify eligible patients using PES CUES triage form
  2. Provide telemedicine
  3. Provide F2F where indicated including OCT as per protocol
  4. Provide procedure, written order, advice and follow up as indicated
  5. Refer to other provider including IP optometrist OCT assessment intermediate GP or secondary care as appropriate
