In February, communication was sent out that NHS England with the support of Hampshire and Isle of Wight (HIOW) ICB announced the rollout of the Electronic Referral Service (eRS) across the Optometry sector in HIOW. Please see our newsletter on our website for further information:

Latest news from Hampshire LOC 20 February 2026

The NHS e-Referral Service (eRS) is a digital platform that facilitates the electronic referral of patients to various healthcare services. In terms of optometry, it will allow optometrists to refer patients directly to hospital eye departments and/or independent sector providers rather than having to refer via the GP.

Training is under way for those practices who have already onboarded, but for any optometrists/ practices who still wishes to use eRS, please email christopher.hatherley@nhs.net for further information.
