Service Update from Solent Medical Services (SMS)

Dear Optom Colleague

Re Solent Medical Services Community Ophthalmology Service

We regret to inform you that effective from 1st April 2025, the SMS Community Ophthalmology Service will no longer be a commissioned service. This means we are unable to accept any new referrals.

At this time, we are unable to provide you with details of an alternative provider. In the meantime, please direct your referral to your patients GP who can refer them appropriately. If you have concerns about your patients’ vision and you feel the patient may have an Ophthalmological emergency, please direct your patient to the Southampton Eye Casualty Department.

We wish to highlight that the decommissioning of this service is not a reflection on it. On the contrary, the service has supported the population of Southampton and West Hampshire since 2001 and has always received very positive feedback from patients and referrers alike.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support over the years

Kind regards,

The Team at SMS
