Sunderland Specialist Eye Hospital

Services are moving from the current Sunderland Eye Infirmary site on Queen Alexandra Road to Sunderland Specialist Eye Hospital in the city centre from 11 July.

Our Emergency Department is the first to move. It will open at 2pm on Saturday 11 July. All other services will open by Thursday 23 July. A breakdown is below:
- Emergency Department (ED) – opens 2pm, Saturday 11 July
- Our ward, Queen Alexandra Unit – opens Saturday 11 July
- Theatres – moves Monday 13 July, reopens Wednesday 15 July
- Cataract Treatment Centre (CTC) – moves Tuesday 14 July, reopens Thursday 16 July
- Outpatients – moves Monday 20 July, reopens Wednesday 22 July
- Orthoptics and Optometry – moves Tuesday 21 July, reopens Thursday 23 July
Beyond the actual moving days, capacity is back to full with no reduction except the moving days themselves.
Patients: Regular patients, or those who have care booked with us, need to check their appointment letter to find out where their next appointment will take place.
HESPs: Please continue to send directly to the optometry department. Please send referrals to the new hospital beyond the 20/07/2026.
