GERS

GERS (Glaucoma Enhanced Referral Service) is now active in the Black Country.

This means all patients with a Black Country GP suspected of having glaucoma should be referred via GERS.

Please see the below exceptions:

•    IOP over 31mmHg (>31mmHg) or suffering a suspected acute glaucoma attack- refer urgently or same day to HES based on your clinical judgement and College Guidance. If you are referring via Cinapsis, ensure you have selected the correct urgency.

•    IOP over 23mmHg and below 32mmHg (24-31mmHg) with no other sign of glaucoma- this patient should be seen in IOPRM service prior to referral (see below). If your practice does not participate in IOPRM, you can refer these patients into GERS.

To refer a patient into GERS, complete a GOS 18 and refer to a practice offering the GERS service. GERS optometrists have a glaucoma qualification (Prof Cert Glauc) and will filter referrals to ensure only appropriate cases are referred on to HES.

Please ensure the patient has a Black Country GP before referring into the GERS service.

IOPRM

Glaucoma repeat measures schemes operate across the region. If a referral is being made for IOP only i.e. normal discs, normal visual fields, no other indication of pathology then the patient should have IOPs repeated under the scheme.
