New Cross Hospital accepts urgent referrals

To confirm the condition you suspect should be referred urgently please consult the College of Optometrists guide to urgency of referrals.

for urgent referrals that need to be seen within 2 weeks:

Call on 01902 695805/695800 and discuss findings. If it is deemed necessary to see the patient as urgent an appointment will be made over the phone. Additionally, referrals can be faxed to 01902 695842 or emailed (via NHSmail only) to rwh-tr.optometry-referrals@nhs.net

If you are unable to get through you should take whatever action you feel is in the patients best interest.

for urgent referrals that need to be seen in 2 to 5 weeks:

Referrals should be sent via the GP. On receipt at Wolverhampton Eye Infirmary, the referral will be reviewed by a consultant according to the Referral Assessment Service(RAS) protocol and prioritised according to the details in your letter. The RAS is effective if your letter is clear and contains reason for referral, relevant findings and a suggested clinic and priority.
