Clinical Governance

The optometric professional bodies and the LOC encourage practices to undertake clinical governance as this is good professional practice.

There is an excellent toolkit “Quality in Optometry Toolkit”(QiO) to assist practices achieve the desired objectives for clinical governance activity. If a practice undertakes to provide enhanced services they may be required to provide clinical governance information but this should be taken into consideration when the fee for the service is agreed.

The Quality in Optometry Toolkit has been updated to reflect the the new GOS contract. Level 1, now reflects the requirement for contract monitoring. It contains useful information to enable you to prepare for a contract monitoring visit. There is a checklist of areas together with help links and links to further information. Level 2 will enable practices to fulfil requirements for enhanced services. Level 3 covers advanced clinical governance activities for those who wish to use this.

The Quality in Optometry toolkit is a valuable tool for practices and will record clinical governance activity as well as act as a source of information.
