Berkshire West – Primary Care Strategy Survey

25 August 2023

Dear Colleague,

Hope you are well.

The Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire West Integrated Care System (BOB ICS) has a vision that ‘everyone who lives in BOB should have the best possible start in life, live happier, healthier lives for longer and be able to access the right support when they need it’. In order to deliver on this vision, there is a need to shift to a more preventative and community-based approach for our NHS services.

Therefore, BOB ICB is embarking on a new piece of work over the next 6 months – The BOB Primary Care Strategy Project. We see Community Pharmacy, Optometry and community dental services an integral part of this strategy alongside general practice and some community services.  The Fuller Stocktake published in May 2022 (NHS England » Next steps for integrating primary care: Fuller stocktake report) emphasised the need for action in three key areas: Access, Prevention & Continuity. It aligns with BOB’s local vision and ambitions and now there is a need for a localised strategy to take this forward –Primary & Community care services (including community pharmacy, optometry and dental (POD) services) will be core to developing and delivering this vision and strategy.

BOB ICB is working with colleagues across the system to document understanding of the current state of all our primary and community care services, to identify good practice to build upon (both locally and nationally), to co-design a new approach to Primary & Community Care delivery, and to set a plan of how to deliver this together over the coming months and years. By January 2024, BOB intends to publish a new agile and dynamic primary and community integration strategy, which delivers a new way of working and promotes stronger integration across all services.

We recognise that there is already some work articulating the challenges in Community Pharmacy, Optometry and Dentistry. However, we would like to build upon this work as part of this project. Therefore, as part of the first phase of work, we alongside our partners who are supporting us – KPMG, will be conducting a wide variety of engagement sessions with stakeholders in POD services:

The survey is the first opportunity for colleagues to be involved in shaping and determining the future of services and we encourage you to complete the survey and share your thoughts.

The survey will be shared with every Community Pharmacy, Community Dental Practice and Optometrist across BOB and we encourage one individual from each provider to fill out the survey  on behalf of their colleagues.

The survey can be found

Optometry – https://forms.office.com/e/YhZFJFuxBk

Please could each practice complete the survey by COP 8th September. Please contact Misha.Shah@kpmg.co.uk or Hannah.Alban@kpmg.co.uk if you have any issues or questions with the survey.

Thanks,

Dr Abid Irfan,

Director of Primary Care
