Use of recall code 5.3 when examining children – reminder for GOS Contractors & all clinical staff
22 January 2026
F.A.O. GOS Contractors and all Clinical staff including locum Optometrists:
At present across London, there are significant wait times for a child who is referred for an ophthalmology outpatient’s appointment. For this reason, I would like to remind all optometrists and clinical staff of the following:
For a child under 7:
- Following their first sight test if the child is found to have a clinically significant prescription with reduced vision (in the absence of pathology and/or binocular vision concerns), for the practitioner to prescribe spectacles and to recall the patient in 3 months.
To assist continuity of care, it is good practice to note on the record card that the reduced vision is the reason for a 3-month recall.
- The 3-month sight test can be undertaken by applying the early recall code 5.3. If at this sight test there has been no improvement in visual acuity, to then refer the patient to secondary care; ensuring the child is wearing an up-to-date prescription.
Please do follow the above advice, when possible, as this will help in ensuring paediatric patients are seen in a timely manner.
