Temporary closure of Kingston Hospital’s acute referral clinic for eye emergencies

6 May 2021

The acute referral clinic for eye emergencies at the Royal Eye Unit at Kingston Hospital is scheduled to undergo essential maintenance and renovation from 24 May 2021. This will require the closure of the unit for a period of 10 weeks, with an estimated reopening in August 2021. The improved facility will be designed to accommodate increased capacity, promote patient privacy and provide a more COVID-safe environment.

From 24 May 2021, GPs and ophthalmic providers with patients requiring emergency eye services are kindly asked to temporarily modify their referral practices and direct patients to the following alternative providers, during the period of closure:

  • Epsom and St Helier
  • St Georges Hospital
  • Moorfields Hospitals (for St Georges Hospital and Ealing Hospital)
  • Western Eye Hospital (Imperial)
  • Ashford and St Peters Hospital
  • Royal County Hospital, Guildford
  • Hillingdon Hospital
  • West Middlesex Hospital

Out of area referrals will need to be redirected to alternative providers in the patient’s geographical area.

During this period, we will continue to have a telephone triage service for advice and will be offering a limited service for patients who are already under the care of the Royal Eye Unit and have acute problems or, those with chronic ophthalmic conditions who have been discharged recently (within 12 months).

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for supporting this service development.
