Frame repair and modification workshop : 21st November

3 October 2025

In conjunction with the Optometry department at the John Radcliffe hospital, we are excited to announce that we have a limited number of places available for a spectacle repair and modification workshop. It will take place at the John Radcliffe hospital on Friday 21st November and costs £36 per delegate – 50% of which will be subsidised by the LOC.

Agenda

1. Bridge conversions. Fitting nose pad on arms and mini fit insert pads. Expand dispensing ranges and enhance fittings. 1.5 hours
This session will be hands on and practical. The delegates will watch a demonstration, then complete the fit themselves. Removing the plastic pad, preparing the surface, drilling the frame and inserting the pad arm. Hints, tips, and handy tricks for making acetate eyewear fit perfectly.

2. Removing screws and frame maintenance. Evaluate tool usage application from basic repairs to adjustments.
This is an easier workshop leading to the lunch break. The delegates will use screw punching tool and re-tap threads into the joints. By using traditional skills, the delegates will gain an in-depth view into basic frame repairs and maintenance.

3. Acetate repairs and side trimming. All things acetate. 1.5 hours
Learn the practical skills to shorten acetate sides (without exposing the core wire), develop the skills to rebuild, and repair acetate frames.
Followed by a discussion ‘what are the limitations in acetate adjustment and maintenance’. We will look at examples of reconditioning techniques and when to spot an adjustment ‘red flag’.

4. Laser welding and silver solder brazing. A look at both techniques and evaluating their application. 45 mins
Discussion into advanced frame repair techniques from silver solder brazing to the laser welding.
