Essential for B&H Practitioners: Wet AMD & Other Referrals

3 December 2024

Brent and Harrow optometrists can take advantage of the established email referral pathways in the boroughs linking primary eyecare and hospitals. These rapid access pathways were established by consultants to reduce the number of patients going via their GP or A&E.

Wet AMD

If you wish to refer a patient to Central Middlesex Hospital (LNWH) regards wet AMD, remove the spaces from the below and replace the ‘at’ with the usual symbol. (It has been written this way to reduce the chances of the address being found and misused by spammers).

rapid access [at] nhs. net

Your patient may be closer to Moorfields Northwick Park:

meh – tr. wet armd [at] nhs. net

(Again, please remove the spaces in the email adresses above and below).

Western Eye Hospital:
imperial . WEH. WetAMD [at] nhs. net

The Western Eye mailbox is monitored closely and actioned within the timescales required for wet macular degeneration treatment to be started within the recommended timescale (within two weeks from referral to treatment).

If you are unsure whether to refer, email anyway and you should receive feedback if the case is unsuitable with a reason why.

These pathways were set up through the LOC interacting with the Trusts. If you’d like to contribute to future advancements in patient care such as these, contact the LOC to find out how you can get involved.

Other services with Moorfields NWL

Patients can now be referred directly to Moorfields North West London (Ealing, Northwick Park, and Brent Cross) without going through the GP. This makes access to care quicker and reduces the potential of delay.

Please ensure you have a choice conversation with patients before referring, ensuring that they are informed and actively involved in the decision on which provider and site to refer to.

NWL Direct Referral process:
All referrals with any additional information must be sent securely using nhs.net email or
Egress to the relevant email address providing the service as stated below:
 Moorfields at Brent Cross: MEHDirect. BC [at] nhs. net
 Moorfields at Ealing: MEHDirect. EA [at] nhs. net
 Moorfields at Northwick Park: MEHDirect. nwp [at] nhs. net

(Remove the spaces from the email addresses above and below).

A quick guide to the referral process is available here.

For Egress setup (around 5 minutes), email moorfields. healthprofessionals [at] nhs. net
