Please find attached your calendar of activities for the month of December. All our remote activities are accessible via computer, tablets, mobile phone or land line. You don’t need to have an internet connection or computer and can simply dial in from any phone. The call is to a regular UK landline and will either be included in your call plan or charged accordingly depending on your call package.
If you are new to our remote activities programme and you are unsure how it all works or feeling nervous, let us know and we can arrange for someone to give you a call beforehand. If you would like this support in accessing our activities please call 0118 987 2803.
At the date this calendar was written, the UK national lockdown is planned to end on 2nd December. As a result, we plan to restart face to face activities soon afterwards. If the guidance on social gatherings changes, we will keep those booked onto activities informed.
Before booking onto a face to face activity with Berkshire Vision, please read the following code of conduct, in which you need to understand and abide by:
- There is a risk of potentially contracting COVID-19 when attending any face to face activities.
- If you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19 (i.e. continuous cough, high temperature, loss oftaste or smell) please DO NOT attend the session and inform Berkshire Vision immediately. Also inform Berkshire Vision if you have come into contact with anyone with COVID-19 symptoms, then we can follow the NHS track and trace procedure.
- Please wash your hands before and after the session. Activity Leaders will have portable hand sanitisers available.
- Please adhere to social distancing while participating in activities, with the exception of one to one guiding.
- Any equipment used in a session will be cleaned before and after the session.
- Those using Berkshire Vision’s transport, must wear face masks whilst on the journey, unlessmedically exempt.
- Face to face activities can be cancelled at short notice due to bad weather or changes in COVID-19rules. Members booked onto activities will be informed via telephone.
- Due to reduced transport availability and number restrictions on activities, we’ll be operating a firstcome first served system, unless stated otherwise (i.e. priority places). Waiting lists will be created ifwe exceed number limits.
- Berkshire Vision staff members have the right to exclude members from activities that are behavingin a manner that risks the spread of COVID-19.We’ve strived to improve our accessibility of remote activities, so this month we’re trialling out the use of the same phone number and link to access all remote sessions. However, the numbers and links for the quiz sessions will stay the same as previous months and BucksVision’s technology session access details, can be found further down. Coffee Mornings – Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at 11am
A remote coffee morning for a general chit-chat, whilst you enjoy your own refreshments from the
comfort of your own home. There are no coffee mornings on the following dates – 24th, 28th and 31st. See joining details on page 1.
Quiz Nights – Tuesdays at 4pm
There is no quiz on Tuesday 29th December. Join Berkshire Vision’s quiz and challenge your knowledge. Please register with us and we will allocate you 1 of 4 teams with a team leader.

Football Club – Thursdays at 3pm
Let’s Talk Football! What do you love most about the beautiful game?? What do you think about VAR? Who’s your favourite team/player past or present? Come and join the fun and let’s talk everything Football. These sessions will be run by visually impaired members, so please announce yourself when joining the session. See joining details on page 1.
Exercise Session on Tuesday 1st at 11am
Join us for a remote exercise session designed to get our heart rates and spirits up. These will be simple exercises that you can put as much or as little effort into as you want. It will be upbeat with music to help keep us fit and healthy whilst indoors. You will need water and comfy clothes, with the option for additional weights (can use alternatives like cans of beans) and a band (can use alternative like belt) for our gentle exercise group. Chair-based Yoga – Wednesday 2nd at 3pm
Neeta runs our monthly chair-based yoga sessions, which include guided mindfulness, gentle posture and mobility exercises and guided relaxation. Please wear comfortable clothes and use a chair on a non-slippery surface (for example, you can place the chair on a yoga mat). There is a preference to complete this session in bare feet and have cushions/yoga blocks available to elevate the feet from the floor. For Neeta’s benefit in meeting your needs, we’ll need attendees to complete a medical questionnaire before your first session. If you need help to fill this in, call Hannah on 0118 987 2803. 18-35 Group – Wednesday 2nd at 6:30pm
We’ll be holding a remote session for those aged between 18-35, to discuss what activities the group would like to do each month in the new year. For new comers to the group, this will be a nice way to meet everyone and for others to catch up. BucksVision Remote Technology Session – Thursday 3rd at 2pm
We are joining up with our neighbours BucksVision for a remote technology session. The topic of the session will be smart televisions: what they can do; how accessible they are and the associated technology like Amazon Firestick. This event takes place on Zoom, if you have any questions about how to access this platform, please do get in touch with Hannah.

Newly Diagnosed group – Friday 4th at 11am
A group for anyone who has been diagnosed with a visual impairment in the last year, to gain insight and support where you may need it, or just to meet and chat with other people in a similar position. See joining details on page 1.
Meditation Session – Tuesday 8th at 11am
Join us for a remote meditation session to help relax the body and mind. These sessions will focus on breathing techniques to calm the body and mind, which can help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. See joining details on page 1.
Murder Mystery – Wednesday 9th at 2pm
Join us for a bit of role play to work out who committed the murder. If you would like to play a part, you will be allocated a character and given a copy of your script in advance. Feel free to dress up as your character and act as you think they would during the game. The script can be sent to you by email or by post in large print. If you would prefer not to play a part, come along anyway to watch and join in, working out who the dastardly murderer might be. Once the script has been read, everyone will guess who they think the murderer is and with a grand reveal from the murderer, we can see whose detective skills were right. Esme’s Friends (Charles Bonnet Syndrome Group) – Friday 11th at 2pm
In partnership with Esme’s Umbrella, this is a group for anyone with Charles Bonnet Syndrome to gain insight and support where you may need it, or just to meet and chat with other people in a similar position. See joining details on page 1.
HumanWare Technology Session – Monday 14th at 2pm
Sophia from HumanWare will be running a session that provides an introduction and brief overview of their low vision technology, including handheld magnifiers, desktop magnifiers and text to speech machines. The session will finish with a Q&A and a chance for individuals to enquire about the products. See joining details on page 1.
Retinal Detachment Group – Friday 18th at 11am
A group for anyone who has experienced retinal detachment. This session is a great way to meet others in a similar situation and gain insight and support where you may need it, or just to meet and chat with other people in a similar position. See joining details on page 1.
Festive Afternoon Tea and Games – Monday 21st at 2pm – £12.50 + £5 for delivery
Join us for a selection of shop bought and homemade festive food and drink, alongside some festive cheer and games. The festive afternoon tea includes bite size portions of: Christmas cake, millionaire shortbread, brownie, mince pie, shortbread, gingerbread, turkey and cranberry sandwiches, cheese and crackers, hot chocolate sachet and mulled wine spices. If you have any dietary requirements, please inform the office when booking onto the tea. We cannot guarantee to meet all dietary requirements but we’ll do our best to accommodate. Book Club – Last Tuesday of Month (22nd) at 11:30am
This month’s book is ‘The Lovely Bones’ by Alice Sebold. You are very welcome to join the book club. Talking books can be downloaded for free on the RNIB website. All of the books being read in the book club will be available on the RNIB library. Go to http://RNIB.org.uk and select ‘reading services’ and select ‘RNIB library’ then ‘Title Search’ at the top of the page. Christmas Carols – Wednesday 23rd at 2pm
Join us for some festive spirit in our last session before Christmas. We have a CD of a local choir singing Christmas carols, that we’ll be sharing with everyone. You can either sing along to the songs or peacefully listen. See joining details on page 1.

Baking Session at Berkshire Vision Offices on Monday 7th either at 10am or 1pm – £5 + contribution towards transport if needed (£7.50)
Do you enjoy a bit of baking or just like tasting the goods afterwards? Then why not join us for a baking session at Berkshire Vision’s Office. We’ll be running two separate sessions with the maximum of 4 members at each session. One session will start at 10am for those living in East Berkshire/Reading area and the other at 1pm for those living in West Berkshire/Reading area.
Craft Session at Berkshire Vision Offices on Thursday 10th either at 10am or 1pm – £5 + contribution towards transport if needed (£7.50)
Do you have a creative mind and enjoy arts and crafts? Then why not join us for a session of festive crafts ready for Christmas at Berkshire Vision’s Office. We’ll be running two separate sessions with the maximum of 4 members at each session. One session will start at 10am for those living in East Berkshire/Reading area and the other at 1pm for those living in West Berkshire/Reading area.
Golf at Billingbear Park Golf Course on Friday 11th at 9am – £8.15 (Pay at Venue) + contribution towards transport if needed (£7.50)
Join us for a round of golf on Billingbear’s 9-hole golf course. Members will be given a golf caddy to help provide instruction of where and how far to hit your golf balls. Members can bring their own golf clubs or can hire them at the venue for an extra contribution of £6 per half set. The Venue only accepts card payments. If this activity is cancelled due to bad weather, we can offer a session at Wokingham Family Golf Driving Range.
Park Walk at Thames Valley Park on Thursday 17th at 1pm – free + contribution towards transport if needed (£7.50)
If weather permits, join us for a walk through the park to appreciate nature and a chance to chat to others. This walk is roughly a 2-mile circuit. We’ll walk around the Thames Valley Nature Park, then stroll along the River Thames banks up to a lock for boats, where we’ll turn around and head back. The trail is bumpy, with varying textures throughout the walk (pavement, stones, gravel and sand). Benches are available at the start and middle of the walk but not in between. There are no toilets on site, so we’ll provide an opportunity to stop off at Berkshire Vision Offices for a toilet break. Please bring food (snacks) and drinks to consume if wanted, as there’ll be nowhere to purchase these items.
Running Session at Palmer Park on Friday 18th 4-5pm – £2 + contribution towards transport if needed (£7.50)
Join us for a bit of running on the track, whether you want a social run or want to improve your technique, all levels of ability are welcome. A volunteer coach runs the sessions and will organise running guides for each member. We are sharing the track with another club, so the £2 will either need to be brought in cash on the day or paid via card by telephone to Berkshire Vision prior to the activity. Cinderella at Theatre Royal Windsor on Wednesday 6th January at 1pm – £15 + contribution towards transport if needed (£7.50)
We’ve reserved provisional tickets for the pantomime show in the new year. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there are a limited number of seats available, with different households having to socially distance in the theatre. Audio description is available upon request. Tickets will be given on a first come first served basis, with a waiting list created for numbers exceeding the limit.
